Visiting U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice told Lebanese President Michel Suleiman on Monday that the U.S. supports "democratically elected government in Lebanon,' LBC TV reported.
"Doha accord serves the interest of the Lebanese people, so the U.S. supports this accord," Rice said after meeting with Suleiman.
She expressed U.S. support for Lebanon's institutions, democracy and sovereignty.
Asked about indirect efforts and contacts between Israel and Syria, Rice said: "We support Israeli efforts aimed at reaching peace with Syria"
Rice is due to meet also with Prime Minister Fouad Seniora, Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri and Majority leader MP Saad Hariri.
The visit came as a surprise, and under tight security, amid a political deadlock regarding the formation of a new cabinet which has been delayed for the third week now.
The last visit by Rice to Lebanon was in July 2006 during the 34-day war between Israel and Hezbollah. Source: Xinhua
