U.S. Secretary of state Condoleezza Rice, who arrived in Lebanon for a surprise visit on Monday, reiterated after meeting with Lebanon's Prime Minister-designated Fouad Seniora the U.S. support to Lebanon's sovereignty and democracy, local LBC TV channel reported.
Rice said that "I look forward to working with the Lebanese government and democratic institutions." She also expressed hope that UN resolution 1701 and other related resolutions would be implemented, and a solution to Shibaa farms would be reached.
Shibaa Farms are Lebanese territories which were occupied along with Golan Heights in 1967, and are sill under Israeli control.
Hezbollah says its group would keep their arms as long as there are Lebanese territories under Israeli occupation.
During the talks, Rice revealed that UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is working on the implementation of UN resolution.
Soon after her arrival in Lebanon earlier on Monday, Rice met with Lebanese president Michel Suleiman at the presidential palace in Babdda, and she noted the U.S. supports the "democratically elected government in Lebanon."
"Doha accord serves the interest of the Lebanese people, so the U.S. supports this accord" Rice added. The U.S. official reaffirmed her country's support for Lebanon's institutions, democracy and sovereignty.
Rice's surprise visit is under tight security that amid a political deadlock regarding the formation of a new cabinet which has been delayed for the third week now.
The last visit of Rice to Lebanon was in July 2006 during the 33 days of war between Israel and Hezbollah. Source: Xinhua
