Jordanian Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Maha Khatib said Wednesday that Arab countries still have a long way to put their tourism in a position that benefits their countries.

The minister made the comments when inaugurating the 11th session of Arab Ministerial Tourism Council held here.

Khatib, who took over the presidency of the current session of the council, said tourism figures of the region showed that its global market share in 2007 rose by 13.4 percent than the previous year.

She added that though the growth, the biggest compared with the rest of the world, is satisfactory, they still have a long way to go.

Meanwhile, Lebanese ambassador to Amman Charbel Aoun, in a speech delivered on behalf of the Lebanese minister of tourism, said growth of the tourism sector benefits the Arab region by creating job opportunities, encouraging domestic and foreign investments as well as enhancing other activities related to tourism.

The ongoing ministerial council, according to Assistant Secretary General for Economic and Social Affairs of the Arab League Mohammed bin Ibrahim Tuwaijri, aims to promote the tourism sector in Arab countries to maximize its contribution to the overall sustainable development in the region.
