One Turkish soldier was killed in a clash with the rebel Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK) in southeastern Turkey on Tuesday, the semi-official Anatolia news agency reported.

The clash erupted between Turkish security forces and a group of PKK militants in Dicle town of the southeastern Diyarbakir Province, said the report.

A soldier identified as Erhan Caliskan was killed when the PKK rebels opened fire on the security forces.

The Turkish military has periodically bombed and shelled the PKK positions in Turkish-Iraqi border area during the past few months.

The PKK, listed by the United States and Turkey as a terrorist group, took up arms in 1984 with the aim of creating an ethnic homeland in the southeast Turkey. More than 30,000 people have been killed in the over-two-decade conflict.
