A suicide bomber blew himself up on Tuesday inside a building of the district council office of Baghdad Shiite bastion of Sadr City, killing two U.S. soldiers and four Iraqis, an Interior Ministry source said.
The suicide bomber blew up his explosive vest at around 9 a.m.(0600 GMT) when U.S. soldiers were inside the district council of Sadr City in eastern Baghdad, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
Five U.S. soldiers and five Iraqi civilians were wounded by the attack in the stronghold of Mahdi Army militia loyal to anti-U.S. cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, the source added.
The U.S. soldiers were at the scene to supervise the process ofa election as the council was to elect new members, the source said.
The U.S. military did not immediately confirm the incident.
On Monday, two U.S. soldiers were killed and three others wounded when a councilor of the municipality office in the town of Madain south of Baghdad opened fire on the troops, U.S. military and Iraqi police said.
An interpreter accompanying the U.S. troops was also wounded by the attack, the military statement said.
The latest deaths bring the number of U.S. troops killed in Iraq since the March 2003 invasion to about 4,106, according to media count based on Pentagon figures.
