Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Thursday that hegemonic powers cannot impede the country's accomplishments in nuclear technology, Iran's Press TV satellite channel reported.

The enemies have not been able to prevent Iran from moving forward in nuclear technology, Ahmadinejad said in Iran's western province of Kermanshah.

"We should remain steadfast and build Iran with all of our capabilities," Ahmadinejad said, adding that "the enemies' attempts to weaken the will of the Iranian nation would be futile."

The foes of the Islamic Republic should realize that sanctioning Iran would only speed up the country's development, he said.

The UN Security Council has imposed three rounds of sanctions against Iran over its nuclear program.

The 27-member EU on Monday decided at a meeting in Luxembourg to freeze the assets of Iran's largest bank, Bank Melli, and impose a travel ban on high-level experts dealing with Iran's nuclear program.

Under the new sanctions, the operations of the bank at its European offices in London, Hamburg and Paris will be stopped, while another 20 individuals and 15 organizations were added to EU's visa-ban and assets-freeze lists.

On Tuesday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad-Ali Hosseini condemned the new EU sanctions against Iran, saying such measures are "illegal."
