Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit warned on Wednesday that a peaceful solution to the Middle East conflict remains at risk so long as Israel continues its settlement activities in the disputed lands.

Abul Gheit made the remarks at a joint press conference with his Irish counterpart Micheal Martin following their meeting earlier in the day, the official MENA news agency reported.

The Egyptian top diplomat said a viable unified Palestinian state will fail to exist against such a background, which means the conflict between the Palestinians and Israel will "have no definite end."

As for the situation in the Palestinian territories of Gaza Strip, Abul Gheit called on Israel and Hamas-led Palestinian groups to literally stick to an Egyptian-brokered ceasefire in and around the Palestinian enclave.

The fragile Gaza truce, which took effect on June 19, was breached from time to time by Palestinian militants' rocket attacks against Israel and the latter's punitive closure of the Gaza crossings.

Martin said Ireland also supports a two-state solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, believing the Israeli settlement practice stand in the way of achieving the goal.

The Irish foreign minister said his country backs the efforts to strike a Palestinian-Israeli peace deal leading to the establishment of a Palestinian state beside Israel.

Martin, who arrived in Cairo Tuesday on a two-day visit to Egypt, was also scheduled to visit Israel and the Palestinian territories.
