Soldiers of a special Israeli army elite force shot dead a Palestinian militant on Wednesday night in the northern West Bank city of Jenin, Palestinian security sources said.

The sources said that 23-year-old Talal Aabed, member of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas Fatah movement, died of his wounds two hours after he was shot by the Israeli soldiers.

The sources said Aabed and another militant were driving a car near the village of Kofor Dan west of Jenin, adding that a special Israeli army force were in another car then asked the militants to stop the car, but Aabed tried to escape and the soldiers shot at him.

Aabed was critically injured after he was shot in the neck and died of his wounds later in an Israeli hospital, while his colleague was arrested, the sources added.

Killing Aabed may affect a fragile Egyptian-brokered truce reached in June 19 between Hamas movement and Israel in the Gaza Strip. So far, Gaza militant groups have not responded to Aabed's death.
