Egypt's Shura Council (upper house of the parliament) on Wednesday called on the UN Security Council to ask the International Criminal Court (ICC) to stop its pursuit of Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir.

The Shura Council also warned of grave consequences of the ICC move in a statement, the Egyptian official MENA news agency reported.

On Monday, the Hague-based ICC Chief Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo formally requested an arrest warrant against al-Bashir for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in the western Sudanese region of Darfur.

The Shura Council said Sudan is not a member of the ICC, which means any jurisdiction by the court is not applicable on the African country.

The Shura Council said the African Union and the Arab Parliament should work together to settle this issue peacefully for Sudan's unity and stability, urging the international community to contribute to reconstruction efforts in the restive Darfur region.

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has warned that the ICC move would further complicate the situation in Sudan and lead to collapse of peace talks between the Sudanese government and rebels in Darfur.
