Iran's top nuclear negotiator SaeedJalili said on Friday that Iran welcomes U.S. participation in international talks over its nuclear program provided Washington does not repeat "past mistakes", Iran's English-language Press TV satellite channel reported.
Iran attaches importance to the stance taken by the United States during the talks, Jalili said before leaving for Saturday's nuclear talks in Swiss city of Geneva.
"What is important for us is their approach during the negotiations. If they (Americans) adopt a constructive stance and avoid repeating previous mistakes, the talks would certainly be constructive," he said.
Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki also said on Thursday that forthcoming nuclear talks in Geneva with the participation of a U.S. diplomat for the first time signaled good developments ahead.
"The presence of US representative William Burns at the nuclear talks on Saturday will help Washington officials hear Iran's views directly," the minister said during a visit in Damascus.
In Geneva, Jalili and EU Foreign Policy Chief Javier Solana will discuss the international incentive package that was delivered to Tehran in mid-June .
The U.S. Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs William Burns will attend the talks in Geneva and join leaders from other countries to meet with Iran's top nuclear negotiator.
The United States, which cut diplomatic ties with Iran shortly after its 1979 Islamic revolution, accused Tehran of seeking to build nuclear bombs. Tehran, however, insists that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.
