An official from Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah movement Tuesday denied any practical steps on the ground to resume inter-Palestinian dialogue with Hamas.
"I can't say there are actual steps on the ground about the dialogue or to implement President Abbas' initiative and this is a frustrating and sorrowful thing," said Zakareya al-Agha, Fatah representative in the Hamas-controlled Gaza.
Last month, Abbas said he was ready to talk with Hamas, whose unity government has been dismantled by Abbas following Hamas' bloody takeover of the Gaza Strip. Hamas welcomed the initiative.
The cleavage between rival Hamas and Fatah widened in June 2007when Hamas chased security forces loyal to Abbas and Fatah out of the Gaza Strip, taking the rein of the coastal enclave.
Abbas, in response, formed a new government ruling from the Fatah-controlled West Bank and has shunned any contact with Hamas since then.
"We hope things will change better in the coming days and the dialogue starts," al-Agha said, adding that the political split between the geographically-divided Gaza and the West Bank "has affected the international stance regarding the Palestinian cause."
