Three people were killed and some 20 others wounded in a suicide car bomb attack in a town in Diyala province near the Iranian border on Sunday, a provincial police source said.
A suicide bomber drove his explosive-laden car into a checkpoint outside the mayor office of the town of Khanaqin, some 140 km northeast of Baghdad, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
The three killed were members of Kurdish security members, the source said.
Diyala province, which stretches from the eastern edges of Baghdad to the Iranian border, has long been stronghold for al-Qaida in Iraq network.
U.S. and Iraqi security forces have been conducting major offensives against extremist Sunni and Shiite militiamen in the province and some other provinces.
