Israel on Sunday called for a peaceful solution to the recent fighting in Georgia's breakaway region of South Ossetia, while saying that Israel recognizes Georgia's territorial integrity.
"Israel is following with great concern the developments in South Ossetia and Abkhazia and hopes the violence will end," the foreign ministry said in the statement following a discussion held by Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni.
"Israel recognizes the territorial integrity of Georgia and calls for a peaceful solution," the statement added.
The ministry last week held a meeting on the recent fighting between Georgian and Russian forces in South Ossetia, and decided to recommend the defense ministry to completely halt arms sales to Georgia, local daily Ha'aretz reported Sunday. Yet no change of policy has been announced.
South Ossetia declared independence from Georgia in the early 1990s and was governed by a secessionist government since then although its independence has not been internationally recognized.
On Friday, Georgian troops began a military action against South Ossetia's forces in an attempt to re-establish control over the region. In response, Russian troops moved into the region to fight the Georgian forces. Source:Xinhua
