Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Seniora declared a day of mourning on Thursday across the country in honor of 17 people killed and some 40 others wounded in a blast in the northern city of Tripoli, local Naharnet website reported.

Meanwhile, the Lebanese higher defense council is expected to meet later Thursday to take action against terrorist attacks, the report added.

"The defense council is bent to undertake measures to confront terrorist threats" and confront possible schemes to shake security, the report said.

Lebanese President Michel Suleiman is expected to attend the aggregation of the higher defense council after he returns from Damascus.

Seventeen people, including 10 army soldiers, were killed and some 40 others wounded on Wednesday morning in the explosion which rocked the northern city of Tripoli, LBC TV reported.

Tripoli witnessed sectarian fighting last month in which 23 people were killed in battles between militants from rival Sunni Muslims and Alawite communities of Bab-al Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen.
