A U.S. marine was killed by small-arms fire attack in Iraq's western province of Anbar, the U.S. military said on Friday.
A marine assigned to a Multi-National Force-West was killed on Thursday when his unit came under small arms-fire while conducting security operations near the city of Fallujah, a military statement said.
An investigation about the incident is currently underway, the statement said.
The name of the deceased soldier is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, it added.
Anbar province, including Fallujah, some 50 km west of Baghdad, has been relatively calm since more than a year and a half ago after Sunni tribes and anti-U.S. insurgent groups turn up against al-Qaida in Iraq network, cooperating with the U.S. troops and Iraqi security forces.
More than 4,140 U.S. soldiers have been killed in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003, according to media count based on Pentagon figures.
