Israeli Interior Minister Meir Sheetrit Tuesday announced his candidacy for the leadership of ruling Kadima party.
Sheetrit made the announcement at a news conference in his campaign for chairmanship of the Kadima party, local media reported.
He told the reporters that "the fate of the party and the state can't be gambled away by letting people without experience jump right into senior positions," stressing the importance of political experience.
The prime minister does not need to be a general, Sheetrit said.
Sheetrit will face competition from frontrunner Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, Transportation Minister Shaul Mofaz and Public Security Minister Avi Dichter.
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, also current Kadima chairman, has announced that he would not compete in Kadima's primary scheduled for Sept. 17, and would resign as soon as a new party leader is chosen.
