Turkey's President said late Thursday that he believed no new arrangements were needed in the Black Sea region, commenting on the possible U.S. involvement in re-balancing powers in the Black Sea region, the semi-official Anatolia news agency reported on Friday.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Romanian President Traian Basescu, who arrived in Istanbul for one-day working visit, Abdullah Gul said, "I do not think that a new arrangement is needed in the region".
"As countries with coasts on the Black Sea, we are determined to protect the region's peace and stability," Gul was quoted as saying.
Gul said that his comprehensive talks with Basescu contributed remarkably to the improvement of bilateral relations between Turkey and Romania, as well as regional cooperation.
Gul said that the value of the investments conducted by Turkish businessmen in Romania reached 2 billion U.S. dollars, adding that the total trade volume of the two countries was almost7 billion U.S. dollars as of the end of 2007.
For his part, Basescu said that Turkish and Romanian officials also discussed energy projects, adding that Nabucco and other projects could continue.
Basescu said that his country supported Turkey's bid to join the European Union.
