Lebanese cabinet issued an executive decree during its weekly meeting late Thursday, to establish officially diplomatic ties between Lebanon and Syria, local As-Safier daily reported Friday.
The cabinet convened at the presidential palace, and was headed by President Michel Suleiman.
Contrary to what was expected, the cabinet did not name a new army commander, but instead focused on the diplomatic ties with Syria, since consensus was not reach regarding the name of a new commander.
Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Fawzi Salloukh told reporters that Lebanon and Syria will take necessary measures to exchange ambassadors as soon as possible.
The cabinet also decided to open an embassy in Syria, and exchange ambassadors, the report added.
The cabinet's decree came over one week after President Suleiman visited Syria, and agreed with Syrian President Bashar Assad to establish diplomatic relations between the two neighboring countries.
Establishing diplomatic ties between the two countries takes place for the first time since their independence from French colonization over 60 years ago.
