Jordan seeks Iraqi natural gas to supplement its imports from Egypt, official news agency Petra reported on Sunday.

Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Khaldoun Qteishat said Jordan was making contacts with Iraq to develop gas fields and examine the possibility of allocating part of their production to Jordan.

According to Qteishat, Jordan's needs of gas for industrial purposes until the year 2017 stands at 1.5 billion cubic meters a year, which cannot be met by the Egyptian gas import only.

Under a deal signed last April, Jordan was able to increase its imports of gas from Egypt from 0.7 billion cubic meters to 1 billion cubic meters a year.

Unlike its oil-rich neighbors, Jordan, home to some 6 million people, lacks energy resources. It imports 95 percent of its energy needs and has an annual water deficit of more than 500 million cubic meters, official data showed.
