Arab League (AL) Secretary General Amr Moussa and a senior Egyptian diplomat on Sunday welcomed the efforts of a group of international activists to break the siege on the Palestinian territory of the Gaza Strip.
In a statement, Moussa expressed his appreciation to the move of the international campaigners, terming their action as a "daring step."
On Saturday afternoon, two boats carrying the international campaigners sailing from Cyprus arrived at a port of Gaza in a bid to challenge the year-long blockade Israel imposed upon the coastal enclave.
The two small wooden boats, which left Cyprus on Friday, carried about 40 international peace and human rights activists from Free Gaza Movements and medical supplies for children in the Strip.
Moussa said the move has sent a strong message from civil organizations to protest against the Gaza siege, urging more moves by the international and Arab civil community to face the tight siege on Gaza.
Meanwhile, head of the Egyptian Council for Foreign Affairs Abdel-Raouf el-Reidi said this move could be the first step of the international community for further efforts to support the Palestinians in the besieged strip.
"This move is not only meant to break the siege but also to end the silence on what is going on in Gaza," the Egyptian official MENA news agency quoted el-Reidi as saying.
