A senior Hamas leader said Monday that it is difficult for Egypt to successfully broker a reconciliation among the Palestinian factions.
"As long as the American veto on the Palestinian reconciliation remains in place, Hamas sees it would be difficult for the meetings and discussions to strike a reconciliation," said Mahmoud Zahar, former Hamas foreign minister.
Zahar's remarks came as representatives of the Palestinian factions started to visit Cairo to separately meet with Egyptian mediators over the Palestinian reconciliation.
The Islamic Jihad is the first Palestinian group to send its representatives to the Cairo meeting.
Zahar said the feuding factions of Hamas and Fatah will be the last groups to meet the Egyptian officials, denying reports that Hamas politburo chief Khaled Mashaal arrived in Cairo for the same purpose.
The reconciliation was needed to end the widening political split between the Palestinian territories of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. Last summer, Hamas routed the regular forces of Palestinian National Authority and seized control of the coastal strip.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, whose forces lost Gaza, consolidated his power in the West Bank to prevent another Hamas takeover.
