An opposition-led delegation plans to visit the Egyptian embassy here on Wednesday, urging the country to open the Rafah border crossing with Gaza, local daily The Jordan Times reported.

"Egypt has an important role to play in easing the burdens of Palestinians in Gaza and we will be urging them to play the role everybody expects of them," said Ali Abul Sukkar, who is an official with Jordan's main opposition Islamic Action Front and will head the delegation.

"We want to end this shameful blockade on Gaza, to which the Arab countries contribute," Abul Sukkar said, noting that Egypt's stance regarding the blockade is "worrying."

The delegation will be comprised of officials from various human rights groups including the Arab Organization for Human Rights and the Adalah Group for Human Rights, in addition to professional association members, according to the official.

Israel has allowed only basic humanitarian supplies to enter the strip since the Islamic Resistance Movement(Hamas) seized control in June 2007. It has also tightened restrictions on electricity and fuel supplies and limited the number of people allowed to leave for medical treatment.

Under a truce reached with Hamas this June, Israel committed itself to easing the blockade but it has failed to deliver on this commitment, the report said.
