Iran's National Confidence Party has officially nominated party leader Mehdi Karroubi as its candidate for Iran's next presidential race, the English-language Press TV satellite channel reported on Wednesday.
Central council of the National Confidence Party approved Karroubi's participation in Iran's 10th presidential race as the party's candidate in a unanimous vote, the party's spokesman Ismail Gerami-Moqaddam was quoted as saying.
The decision was made following three weeks of deliberations atthe party's central council, Gerami-Moqaddam said.
Karroubi, the two-time former parliament speaker, has not yet responded to his party's choice and will announce his decision in upcoming weeks, Gerami-Moqaddam added.
The National Confidence Party belongs to the Reformist Coalition as opposed to the Conservative Alliance. Karroubi, Secretary General of the party, stood as a candidate in Iran's 9thpresidential elections in 2005.
Iran's 10th presidential elections will take place in mid-2009.
The official IRNA news agency said Monday that Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei asked Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to prepare for a second term in office.
Ahmadinejad has been facing criticism from the public and pro-reform opponents over the country's economy and rising inflation.
Iran's inflation rate once hit about 26 percent this year, leaving price hikes the biggest problem for ordinary Iranians.
Khamenei has told Ahmadinejad's government to control inflation.
