The calm in the Gaza Strip has been holding relatively well since a truce went into effect in June, local daily The Jerusalem Post reported Monday.
Yuval Diskin, head of Israeli internal security agency Shin Bet, was quoted as saying that some 36 attacks from the Hamas-ruled enclave, most of them were Kassam or mortar attacks, happened since the implementation of the Egypt-brokered the ceasefire, comparing with some 300 incidents reported in the month before the ceasefire.
Diskin told the cabinet on Sunday that Hamas was seemingly interested in preserving the ceasefire, yet it was also trying to improve its position through arms smuggling from Egypt.
Although the quantity of explosives coming in through the underground tunnels has declined, the number of small arms is increasing, he added.
Egypt is carrying out operations against the smuggling, but mostly against the drug trade and less against the arms smuggling, said the internal security chief.
As for the Palestinian National Authority, Diskin said that after President Mahmoud Abbas' term ends on Jan. 9, a political turmoil might erupt and it is uncertain whether new elections would be held due to the internal Palestinian strives. Source:Xinhua
