Israel will hold a drill on Tuesday to prepare commanders for scenarios involving a radioactive attack in Tel Aviv which might cause massive casualties, local daily The Jerusalem Post reported Monday.
The emergency response exercise, the first of its kind in Israel, will be carried out by the National Emergency Authority of the Defense Ministry at the ministry's headquarters in Tel Aviv, said the report.
The goal of the exercise is to test the authority's ability to deal with such kind of attack, wherein thousands might supposedly be killed or injured, such as to quickly identify a contaminated scene, isolate it, neutralize the chemical or biological agent, and treat and evacuate the wounded, according the report.
"This is the first time that all of the country's relevant authorities will be tested in real time on how to respond to a dirty bomb and not a missile attack," a defense official was quoted as saying.
The drill was designed amid fears that Iran would fire a ballistic missile at Israel after obtaining a nuclear capability, or it would transfer dirty bombs to Hezbollah, Hamas or the Islamic Jihad for use in attacks against Israel, said the report.
"We need to be ready for every possible scenario, particularly at a time when our enemies are building up unconventional capabilities," another official was quoted as saying.
