Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and his U.S. counterpart George W. Bush will meet on the sidelines of UN General Assembly in New York later this month, a Palestinian official said on Wednesday.
Palestinian Foreign Affairs Minister Riyadh al-Maliki told the press that the Abbas-Bush meeting will take place on Sept. 26 to discuss the ongoing Palestinian-Israeli peace talks.
The United States is convinced that the two sides can reach a deal of creating a Palestinian statehood alongside Israel before Bush quits office this year, according to the official.
The U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has been trying to broker a joint document between Israel and the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) that can be presented to the UN General Assembly during the convention, said al-Maliki, without elaboration on the document.
The PNA accuses Israel of expanding settlement blocs on what would be parts of future Palestinian statehood. This impedes any deal or breakthrough on the final issues they talk about. Source:Xinhua
