An Iraqi policeman was killed and four civilians were injured Monday in a car bomb explosion in the city of Mosul, the capital of Ninevh province, a provincial police source said.
"A booby-trapped car parked near a police checkpoint and a popular market in the Bab Sinjar neighborhood in western Mosul, detonated shortly before midday, killing a policeman and wounding four civilians," the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
The powerful blast also caused damages to several nearby civilian cars and shops, the source said.
Nineveh province, and its capital city Mosul, some 400 km north of Baghdad, is said to be one of the last strongholds of al-Qaida fighters in the war-torn country.
The province has been the scene of a major security crackdown carried out by U.S. troops and Iraqi security forces aimed at uprooting al-Qaida militants and other anti-U.S. insurgent groups.
Violence has dropped to a four-year low in Iraq, while sporadic ccar bombings, roadside bombs and suicide attacks are still haunting the Iraqis. Source:Xinhua
