Jordan and Russia urged Israel to stop actions that might derail the peace process between Palestinians and Israelis, local daily The Jordan Times reported on Tuesday.

This remarks was made Monday by Jordanian Foreign Minister Salah Bashir and visiting Russian Deputy Foreign Minister and Middle East Envoy Alexander Sultanov in a meeting which focused on the latest developments in the region and international efforts to advance the peace process.

The two sides underlined the need for Israel to take concrete measures and meet its commitments by halting all practices that undermine the peace process, change realities on the ground and affect final status issues.

Bashir and Sultanov stressed that Israel needs to halt its settlement activity and take tangible steps to reduce the suffering of the Palestinians, particularly in the economic aspect.

Bashir also warned against the latest Israeli procedures in Jerusalem and construction work at Bab Al Magharbeh, stressing that Jordan is the party entitled to look after the holy sites in Jerusalem.

Bashir commended Russia's role in the Mideast peace process through its membership in the international Quartet, stressing the need to intensify international efforts to achieve a genuine and tangible progress in the Mideast peace process.

The Russian official also held talks Monday with Jordan's King Abdullah II, who emphasized the importance of an effective Russianrole in peace efforts between the Palestinians and Israelis.

Sultanov is currently on a visit to the kingdom to follow up on a recent visit by King Abdullah to Russia and talks with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev last month.
