Visiting Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos said here on Wednesday that his country supports the indirect peace talks between Syria and Israel through Turkey's mediation.
Moratinos expressed the support while meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, according to the official SANA news agency.
The top Spanish diplomat also praised Syria's seriousness in this regard and its commitment to everything that may lead to peace and stability in the Middle East, said the report.
Assad, for his part, underlined the importance of the Madrid conference and commitment to international resolutions as far as peace talks are concerned.
Assad and Moratinos, who arrived here on Tuesday evening, also discussed the outcomes of the summit between Assad and his Lebanese counterpart Michel Suleiman in August and the four-way summit at the beginning of this month that also gathered leaders from France, Qatar and Turkey.
The two sides welcomed the start of dialogue among the Lebanese parties, expressing hope that the sessions would lead to an agreement to preserve security and stability in Lebanon.
Moratinos also praised Syria's constructive role in building strong relations with Lebanon, SANA said.
The two sides, meanwhile, also discussed the growing relations of friendship and cooperation between Syria and Spain and an expected visit of Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero to Syria.
Syria and Israel have conducted four rounds of indirect peace talks under the auspices of Turkey since May.
But a fifth round was postponed again at the request of Israel after a delay earlier this month, announced Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem on Wednesday.
The key issue between the two neighbors remains the strategic Golan Heights, which Israel seized from Syria in the 1967 Six Day War and annexed in 1981, a move not recognized by the international community. Source: Xinhua
