An American soldier was killed by a small-arms fire attack southeast of Baghdad on Tuesday, the U.S. military said.
The incident took place in a village west of Salman Pak area, some 30 km southeast of Baghdad, a military statement said without providing further details.
The Iraqi area is also known as Madain, which is a stronghold for powerful Sunni Arab tribes of Dulaim and Jubour.
The latest death brings the number of U.S. troops killed in Iraq since the March 2003 invasion to more than 4,169, according to media count based on Pentagon figures.
