The United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Saturday denounced the terrorist blast in Syrian capital of Damascus earlier in the day that killed 17 civilians, the official Emirates News Agency reported.

The stance was made by the UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan during a phone conversation with his Syrian counterpart Bashar Al Assad, according to the report.

Sheikh Khalifa also offered his condolences to Assad and families of victims.

A car bomb blast took place Saturday morning on the Mahlaq road in southern Damascus in an area crowded with civilian passers-by, killing 17 civilians and wounding 14 others.

The site was near the Sayeda Zeinab neighborhood, which is popular with Shiite pilgrims from Iran, Lebanon and Iraq.

This was one of the deadliest attacks since 1986 when a series of coordinated attacks in Syria killed at least 144 people and injured another 149.

It was the first explosion in the Syrian capital since February when Shiite militant group Hezbollah leader Imad Moughniyah was killed in a car bombing in a residential neighborhood of Damascus.
