A mayor of a town in Diyala province escaped with wounds a twin roadside bomb attack on his convoy that also wounded seven of his bodyguards on Sunday, a provincial police source said.
"Ahmed Thamir al-Zarkoshi, mayor of the al-Sa'adiya town, some 120 km northeast of Baghdad, was injured when two roadside bombs detonated in a quick succession near his convoy after leaving his house heading to his office in the town," the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
Seven of Zarkoshi's bodyguards were wounded by the powerful blasts which also damaged two of the convoy's vehicles, the source said.
The double attack came as U.S. troops and Iraqi security forces are conducting major offensive against extremist Sunni and Shiite militiamen in Diyala which stretches from the eastern edges of Baghdad to the Iranian border.
