Ahmed Bahar, acting speaker of the Hamas-dominated Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) on Sunday called on President Mahmoud Abbas of Fatah movement and the Islamic Hamas movement to release each other's political prisoners.
Bahar made the call to the press on the eve of Muslim's feast of Lesser Bairam which falls at the end of this month.
Bahar stressed that his call was meant to provide suitable atmosphere for Egypt's efforts to broker a national Palestinian reconciliation between Hamas and Fatah movements.
Last year, Hamas took over the Gaza Strip by force after routing pro-Abbas forces and ousting Fatah. Abbas responded by firing the Hamas-led administration and forming a West-backed government based in the West Bank.
Hamas has rejected Abbas' decisions and, as a result, the Gaza Strip became politically-separated from the West Bank. The feuding parties crackdown against their dissidents: Hamas people in the West Bank and Fatah supporters in the Gaza Strip.
