A Hamas official in Gaza expressed hope on Monday that the upcoming reconciliation dialogue in Cairo would end the current Palestinian political split before the end of President Mahmoud Abbas term in January.
Hamas said Abbas' presidential term ends in January 2009 according to the law, while Fatah insisted that it was agreed to hold both the presidential and legislative elections in January 2010.
Egypt has been preparing for a comprehensive Palestinian dialogue due to be launched in early November to put to an end the current Palestinian political split and the constitutional argument between rival Fatah and Hamas.
Taher al-Noono, spokesman of Hamas government in Gaza, told reporters that in order to make the Palestinian dialogue a success, the atmosphere has to be prepared for it.
He revealed that there are contacts between Hamas and some of Fatah leaders on ending political detentions in both Gaza and the West Bank.
"I believe that dialogue is the best solution for all our disputes," he said.
Meanwhile, Mohamed Dahlan, a senior Fatah movement leader, told a Saudi Arabian newspaper that President Abbas intends to run for a new presidential term.
"I don't see any Palestinian (who) fits for this post except for Abu Mazen, who intends to run for another presidential round next year," Dahlan told Saudi daily Okath.
