The U.S. army in Iraq said Friday that a roadside bomb killed an American soldier in Iraq on Thursday.

The U.S. army said in a statement that the bomb exploded near his vehicle Thursday south of Amarah, a city 200 miles southeast of Iraqi capital city of Baghdad.

The statement also said that the soldier's name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The death raises the number of American service members killed in Iraq to at least 4,177 since the war started in 2003, according to international media account.
