Iraq's presidential council had not approved the provincial election law passed by the parliament, local media reported Friday.
The three-member council, consisting of President Jalal Talabani and his Shiite and Sunni deputies, reportedly agreed on the law early in the day at a meeting in the Kurdish autonomous region with its regional president Massoud al-Barazani.
"They expressed reservations over abrogated article 50 but never endorsed the law," Iraq's Voices of Iraq news agency quoted Deputy Prime Minister Burham Saleh as saying.
Saleh stressed that the meeting which was held in Dukan resort was to deal with the political developments in Iraq.
The provincial election law, which is regarded as a milestone in Iraq's political process, cleared the parliament on Sept. 24, two months after the presidential council rejected a previous version.
Under the law, Iraq is scheduled to elect provincial councils by Jan. 31, except the three Kurdish provinces and oil-rich Kirkuk.
However, Iraq's Christian minority protested the law because it removed the article 50 which regard their due share in the provincial councils. The UN mission in Iraq also calls for reinstate the article.
