Up to 11 people of one family were killed on Sunday when U.S. troops raided a suspected insurgent house in the city of Mosul, said the U.S. military and alocal security source.

A U.S. military statement said that five "terrorists", three women and three children were killed during a U.S. raid on a house believed to be holding a suspect insurgent.

During the raid, the U.S. soldiers came under heavy gunfire after entering the house and then a suicide bomber blew up his suicide vest, the military said without saying how the people died.

An Iraqi security source told Xinhua that U.S. soldiers stormeda house in the 17th of July neighborhood in western Mosul before dawn, killing 11 people from one family.

Three women and three children were among the dead, the source said, adding that the Iraqi security forces arrived the scene later and found a three-year-old child and a three-month-old baby alive.

The Iraqi security forces have no information about the reasonsbehind the U.S. raid on the house, he said.

Also in Mosul, gunmen stormed a funeral tent in the Zanjili neighborhood in western Mosul, killing four people and wounding six others, the source said.

Nineveh province, with its capital city Mosul some 400 km northof Baghdad, is said to be one of the last strongholds of al-Qaida fighters in the war-torn country.

The province has been the scene of a major security crackdown carried out by U.S. troops and Iraqi security forces aimed at uprooting al-Qaida militants and other anti-U.S. insurgent groups.
