Israeli security forces have been placed on high alert as the Jewish state prepares for its most solemn holiday starting Wednesday evening.
Police began on Wednesday morning deploying massive forces in markets, synagogues and other public sites throughout the country, a routine practice for Yom Kippur, or Day of Atonement, every year.
Meanwhile, the Israel Defense Forces has stepped up its presence in and around Jerusalem, especially around the holiest Western Wall, where people will congregate for prayers through Thursday till the fast ends at night.
Local news service Ynet also reported that no vehicle from east Jerusalem, a section of the holy city densely populated by Arabs, will be allowed into the western portion during the holiday.
The defense establishment has confirmed it is currently investigating 11 specific terror alerts, including kidnapping threats, rocket attacks and bombings, as well as dozens of generalalerts, added the report.
Across the world, Israeli embassies and Jewish institutions have also been instructed to increase their security measures.
