Iraqi President Jalal Talabani on Friday strongly condemned Thursday's assassination of a Shiite lawmaker by a motor cycle bomb attack, calling on all Iraqis to be unified against such attacks.
"We have received with deep sadness the news of the martyrdom of Saleh al-Ugaily, a lawmaker from Sadr political movement," Talabani said in a statement issued on Friday by his office.
On Thursday, Ugaily died of wounds sustained from a booby trapped motorcycle explosion parked on a main road and targeted his convoy while it was passing in the Habibiyah neighborhood in eastern Baghdad.
The blast also killed two of Ugaily's bodyguards and wounded three others along with damaging two of the convoy's vehicles.
"All Iraqis, including its political powers, are called on to be unified to ward off all the attempts of planting fight and alienation among Iraqis' components," the statement quoted Talabani as saying.
"Those who committed this heinous crime are the enemies of the Iraqis," he added.
Also on Friday, a security source told Xinhua that thousands of mourners loyal to the Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr took to streets of the neighborhood of Sadr City in eastern Baghdad to condemn and mourn the killing of Ugaily.
Assassinations and bomb attacks have increased recently in Baghdad despite relative lull in violence during the past months.
