Two Iraqi civilians were killed and 14 others injured in a roadside bomb explosion on Friday in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, capital of Nineveh province, a provincial police source said.
"A roadside bomb detonated in the afternoon at a popular marketplace in the Bab al-Tob neighborhood, killing two civilians and wounding 14 others," the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
The powerful blast also caused damages to several nearby shops, stalls and civilian cars, the source said.
Iraqi security forces sealed off the area as rescue teams continued evacuating casualties, he added.
Nineveh province, and its capital city Mosul, some 400 km north of Baghdad, is said to be one of the last strongholds of al-Qaida fighters in the war-torn country.
The province has been the scene of a major security crackdown carried out by U.S. troops and Iraqi security forces aimed at uprooting al-Qaida militants and other anti-U.S. insurgent groups.
