Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas arrived here Saturday on a two-day visit in which he would discuss with Syrian leaders the latest developments on the Palestinian territories and peace process in the region.
Abbas told reporters upon arrival that he would discuss with Syrian officials developments of negotiations between the Palestinians and Israelis and the indirect talks between Syria and Israel sponsored by Turkey.
"Negotiations on the Syrian-Israeli track is important for us and negotiations on the Palestinian-Israeli track is important for Syria," said the Palestinian president.
"There should be coordination between Syria and the Palestinians on the peace negotiations," he added.
On the inter-Palestinian dialogue and reconciliation efforts, Abbas said Egypt is now making efforts to achieve reconciliation among the Palestinians, noting that there would be a declaration in Cairo and a meeting participated by all Palestinian factions.
Abbas is scheduled to meet Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his deputy Farouk al-Shara on Sunday.
Egypt is expected to call for a national Palestinian dialogue in November.
But ahead of this, Egypt prepares to sponsor bilateral talks between Hamas and Fatah on Oct. 25, which would be the first official meeting between the two rival movements since their rift widened last year after Hamas drove out pro-Abbas forces and ousted Fatah from the Gaza Strip in June 2007.
A senior Hamas leader on Saturday said his movement has agreed with Egyptian mediators to form a Palestinian national government and reform security services as part of settling crisis with Abbas' Fatah movement.
Mahmoud Zahar, a Hamas leader who joins a delegation to meet the Egyptian mediators, said the agreement was reached during a round of talks with Egyptian intelligence chief Omar Suleiman and other officials. Source: Xinhua
