An American soldier died from wounds sustained in gunfire in western Baghdad, the U.S. military said on Wednesday.
The incident occurred on Tuesday when insurgents opened small-arms fire on a U.S. patrol in the area at about 4:00 p.m. local time (1300 GMT), a U.S. military statement said.
The soldier was transported to a military medical facility by air medevac, but he was announced dead about an hour later, the statement said.
The name of the deceased soldier is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, it added.
About 4,183 U.S. soldiers have been killed in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003, according to media count based on Pentagon figures.
