Lebanese Foreign Minister Fawzi Salloukh arrived here Wednesday on a mission to sign a joint statement with the Syrians on the start of diplomatic relations between the two neighbors.
Salloukh announced the trip on Tuesday at a press conference inBeirut, saying his visit came in implementation of the resolutionsof the Syrian and Lebanese summit in mid-August, according to the official SANA news agency.
The top Lebanese diplomat said he would hold talks with his Syrian counterpart Walid Muallem and sign the joint statement announcing that the diplomatic ties has been put into effect.
On Tuesday, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad issued a decree ordering the establishment of diplomatic ties between Syria and Lebanon and the creation of diplomatic mission on the ambassador level in the Lebanese capital of Beirut, saying the decree would be in effect upon publishing.
Lebanon and Syria announced on Aug. 13, during an official visit of Lebanese President Michel Suleiman to Syria, that the two neighboring countries agreed to establish diplomatic ties and demarcate their borders.
Bashar said early in September that his country and Lebanon are expected to appoint their ambassadors to each other's capital before the end of this year.
Syria and Lebanon have not established diplomatic relations since their independence from the French colonial rule in the 1940s. Syria withdrew its troops from Lebanon in 2005. Source:Xinhua
