A Palestinian official Thursday said comprehensive elections would be the best way to prevent Hamas from boosting its de-facto power.

"Elections are the solution that will not give the coup rights it doesn't entitled to get," said Yasser Abed Rabbo, a member of the executive committee of the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO).

Abed Rabbo was referring to Hamas' violent takeover of the Gaza Strip in June last year by routing Fatah-dominated security forces loyal to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

"The elections will not turn the coup into a method in the Palestinian political life," Abed Rabbo said, adding that "elections is the base that the Palestinian can stand on to reach a democratic solution to the crisis."

Abed Rabbo demanded that the elections should involve the parliament, the presidency and the Palestinian National Council, the PLO's legislative body.

But Hamas, which won 2006 parliamentary elections, argues that the PLO's executive committee lacks legal credibility for it had exceeded its terms.

Hamas also said it will not accept any proposal for reconciliation with Fatah movement without guarantees that the results of the parliamentary elections would be considered.

Egypt will host and sponsor a national Palestinian dialogue early next month to resolve the consequences of Gaza takeover and the ensuing separation between the coastal strip and the West Bank where the Fatah-dominated Palestinian National Authority (PNA) rules.

Hamas accepted an Egyptian-brokered plan but had some reservations on the Egyptian-drafted agenda of the dialogue.
