Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Hassan Qashqavi said Monday that Iran had received no secret letter from the United States to normalize relations, the official IRNA news agency reported.
"We have received no secret letter and the U.S. still continues its hostile measures against Iranians," Qashqavi told correspondents at his weekly press conference.
"Unilateral imposition of sanctions are the latest example of U.S. hostility towards Iranians," he added.
"The speculation aims to cover up U.S. hostile policies against Iran," the report quoted Qashqavi as saying.
The Israeli newspaper Ha'aretz reported that U.S. President George W. Bush had communicated with Iran to normalize relations.
The paper also said that several American media outlets reported on Saturday that Bush is likely to announce after next month's presidential elections that he intends to restore the diplomatic relations with Iran, almost 30 years after they were suspended.
Tehran has already been informed of the initiative, but its view on the matter remains unclear, the reports were quoted by Ha'aretz.
The U.S. embassy was stormed by Iranian students on Nov. 4, 1979 and its personnel were held hostage for 444 days. The United States broke off diplomatic relations with Iran in 1980 over the embassy takeover and their ties have remained severed ever since.
