Jordan has called on regional countries to establish a database to facilitate ecosystem rehabilitation in those countries affected by the 1991 Gulf War, local daily The Jordan Times reported on Friday.
Jordan made the call on Thursday at a regional meeting for states that received compensation for losses and damages suffered as a direct result of the Gulf War, said the report.
During the meeting, participants from Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and the UN Compensations Committee (UNCC) discussed means to enhance cooperation for rehabilitating the environment and preserving public health, according to the report.
Jordanian Environment Minister Khalid Irani was quoted as saying that the kingdom's water, environment, wildlife, marine life and agriculture sustained damages in the war.
The UNCC decided in 2005 to grant 160.5 million U.S. dollars in compensation and another 1.4 million dollars to tackle the salinity of the country's underground water basins, according to the official. Source:Xinhua
