Ralph Riachi, one of the most respected judges in Lebanon, has resigned from the supreme judicial council in protest against the delay to appoint 100 judges who have been waiting for two years to fill vacant posts, local Daily Star reported Friday.

"In two years we have not nominated any new judges, last Monday I told them I would resign if we fail to nominate the judges at this meeting," Riachi told the Daily Star.

Riachi resigned after the meeting, scheduled for Thursday, was failed to be held as not enough members of the 10-judge council turned up, according to the report.

Riachi, who had been nominated as one of the judges to sit on UN tribunal for the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafic Hariri in Hague, has also turned down the appointment, informed sources were quoted as saying.

Local media have hinted that there have been political and sectarian differences among Lebanese leaders regarding the appointment of new judges, especially over the international tribunal on Hariri assassination.
