A tourist bus overturned in Upper Egypt on Friday morning, killing six Belgian tourists and injuring 29 others, the Egyptian MENA news agency reported.

The accident occurred when the bus carrying the Belgian tourists was traveling on the road between the southern tourism cities of Aswan and Abu Simble, said the report.

An investigation is underway.

Traffic accidents are common in Egypt with an estimated annual death toll of some 6,000 people.

The Egyptian traffic authorities implemented a new traffic code with tougher punishments for lawbreakers as of Aug. 1 in a bid to reduce road accidents.
