Jordan's King Abdullah II on Monday reiterated rejection of Israel's excavations at al-Magharebah Gatein east Jerusalem, a move seen by Muslims as an attempt to change the Arab and Islamic identity of the holy city.
The king made the remarks when meeting Koichiro Matsuura, Director General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), who is in Jordan to inaugurate a UNESCO-sponsored laboratory.
"The monarch asserted the illegality of the Israeli moves at al-Magharebah Gate and urged Israel to abide by the relevant international law, particularly the Fourth Geneva Convention and the Hague Convention of 1954," said a statement by the Royal Hashemite Court.
Jordan will spare no efforts to safeguard the holy sites in Jerusalem in conformity with its historic role to preserve this city's sanctity, added the statement.
The Israeli government has tried to build a bridge and a walkway at al-Magharebah Gate near the al-Aqsa Mosque, the third holiest Islamic site.
Under a peace treaty Jordan concluded with Israel in 1994, the Jewish state respects the special role of Jordan in Muslim holy shrines in Jerusalem.
