Gaza power plant to stop due to fuel shortage

Gaza solo power plant will stop operating on Sunday evening if Israel not allow fuel to enter the Gaza Strip by midday, Palestinian officials warned on Sunday.

Israel shut off all crossing points into Gaza on Tuesday after a flare-up of violence that breached an shaky ceasefire.

"The continuation of withholding the fuel deliveries into Gaza would renew the crisis of electricity shortage in Gaza Strip," said Fawzi Hassouna, an official from the ministry of energy.

The areas of western and northern Gaza city, which get the electricity from the station, would be largely affected by the power shortage, according to Hassouna.

Meanwhile, Israeli defense minister Ehud Barak ordered Gaza commercial crossings to remain closed for the fifth day in a row.

The extension of the closure also violates the Egyptian-brokered ceasefire which calls on Israel to ease Gaza blockade in exchange for halting Palestinian rocket attacks against Israel.

The ceasefire was shocked on Tuesday when Israeli airstrikes killed six Hamas militants. The factions responded by resuming rocket attacks against Israel but Hamas soon ceased the attacks. The less influential Islamic Jihad, which reluctantly accepted June ceasefire, continued to fire rockets into Israel.

Israel tightened the blockade last year after Hamas seized control of the Gaza Strip.
